This is an original post copied over from the old forum, it's a very common question that we get asked all the time, hope it helps

Q. Hi have just found your wonderful site and have never used downloads or cds before so need some advice on which paper is the best to print onto and where to buy it??

Thanks in advance for any help you can give xx

A. you can use whatever paper you want, think everyone has their own preferences.

you can purchase 'decouapge' paper but you ould also use photo paper as well. I use a mixture of paper and usually depends on what i am printing anf how i am going to use it. I do buy good quality paper designed for printing graphics rather than the basic printer paper but it is still not too expensive as long as i keep it out the way of the kids!!!! i sometimes use pealised paper, i got a whole load of it from my paper mill shop where i buy a lot of my card stock, they do theb oxs which you can fill with whatever you want.
Tina.

A. I love the paper mill shop, we used to go there for a day out because our nearest one was 2 hours from us, I used to fill my box up with all white card so I could print on it, I used to get lots of different textures and thickness, although there was never any shiny stuff, I don’t know how much they charge now but the box used to be £4.99 and was about the same size as a ream of paper,

If your going to print on photo card then buy it from Tesco’s or Asda because there cheep and just as good as the expensive stuff,

Your best bet is to hunt down a few craft shops you’ll soon find one with a fill your own box, then you can try lots of different types of card and paper,

Steer clear of big names brands as they work out to expensive,
Sammy.

A. Hello All,

For my downloads I use a variety of different papers, as Tina said it depends on what you are going to use your download for.

Backing paper - I usually use A4 plain white paper and then stick it to the card I want to use.
Tags/pictures - I use thick card not too thick else my printer won't pull it through.
special pictures - If I want a glossy finish I use photo paper only the cheap paper which you can normally find in the £ shops or savers sometimes stock it from time to time. I find this just as good as the expensive glossy papers.(You have to look after your pennies).

If anyone else has any other ideas I would be interested.

A. Have you got a Pound-shop locally? Our one stocks thin white card & also photo paper which is great for run-of-the-mill cards.
For special one I use 100gsm from Rymans which was quite reasonable for a pack of 250 sheets. Don't forget ebay for stocks of papers etc. Apart from good deals from small retailers, there's always someone selling off their goodies from either trying soemthing they couldn't get on with, or have just stopped crafting.
Val

A. I have just bought matt paper from Rymans They are doing 100 sheets for £7.99 with a bogof sound expensive works out at 4p a sheet . I like it have been printing downloads for about a year Love Sammy's stuff great quality.

A. Hi everyone,

as I'm pretty new to the forum, I'm looking through all the previous posts and thought I'd add my thoughts to this one; I use good quality hammered paper for my graphics and backing papers as I love the effect you get with it....sort of mottled; well, 'hammered' I guess!! http://www.scrap-archives.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif I will also be trying some of your other ideas I've just read though, as its always good to try something new.
Have a good day, Ali xx

A. PS. I also love the Paper Mill shop, wandering round filling up my box, I'm like a kid in a sweet shop! http://www.scrap-archives.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif I use the card for backing and layering, and sometimes for making my own cards (eg gatefold) but the troublw with that is getting an envelope to match http://www.scrap-archives.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

A. Hi all

I agree Ali I also use hammer paper as it gives a nice effect and "softness" to the image and doesnt seem to use as much ink ? I also use A4 card to make cards and i find that the pack of c5 envelopes from rymans peel n seal are ideal . Dont have much choice in Glasgow no paper mills and only one main craft shop so I tend to get some stuff from Rymans

A. Me too I love hammered card and I also love the paper mill, we drive all the way from London to Portsmouth just to get paper from one of there shops

Sammy.

A. Thanks Annemarie, will have to get some A5 envelopes
Ali.

A. Ali, I also use the £1-land photo paper, you can also get it in Homes and bargains shops. I also print on acetate and tracing paper. I use the tracing paper to line some of my cards after I have printed a background on it. I make wallets for my cards.
Barb.

A. Hi
Just to say its lovely to hear all these different ideas, i will certainly have to try the hammered card which i had not thought of.
I got some lovely card and envelopes for A5 cards from the 'Stitch and Craft Show' when it came to Manchester last autumn, their were some good bargains in every line
the only problem was getting it all home and not letting hubby see it all http://www.scrap-archives.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif
I think their is a show in London very soon, one of the TV shopping channels were talking about it.
Thank you very much for the info.
Patches.

A. the london show is on later this month patches, im going on the last day which happens toi fall on mothering sunday! i have been saving for ages so i can buy some goodies, i especially want some more cuttlebug embossing folders and want some nestibilities as well.

Hi Everyone,I use ice inkjet photo paper, you can get matt and gloss, I have seen it on ebay, but you can sometimes see on market stalls that sell blank cds and inkjet supplies.very inexpensive, only thing is it sometimes does not go through the printer easily but the print quality is fantastic. I have never found a card that prints as good as this to date . For things like pyramage normally end up printing on photo paper then sticking to thin card with either double sided tape right up to the edge and dot with zig pens.I will try the readers ideas with regard to teco card as would be good for folbacks.

Hi Ali.The ice paper is professional inkjet photo paper 128gsm, Use it for all my decoupage. If you like gloss they do that as well.It sometimes does not go through but well worth the effort 100 sheets a pack and on the markets you can get either 3 or 4 packets for a tenner. The gloss has a lot less sheets

I always use matt photo paper as I think this gives a great finish. I have never been one for a glossy finish as I think that is can distract from the overall effect.

That said I know a lot of people like glossy and there is nothing wrong with this just my personal preference.

Hi all,

Depending on the look I want will depend on what paper I use! I have a local paper shop that does lovely pearlised paper which prints fantastic but I think there postage is a little extreme.

I too have bought the ICE range and you can get various thickness and ive never had a bad print yet using their range! I have bought gloss along with matt - highly recommended and if you want a bit of stability then go for the thicker option!

I also use Crafter's Companion Satin Finish paper along with super smooth decoupage paper which you can find on create & craft or crafting direct.

Hope this helps someone?
